Perhaps they are lazy and are simply using the simplest measure readily available. Surveying senior citizens for their highlights of 2006 wouldn't have been quite as easy.
Thus currently in society, communication that is available the quickest and easiest becomes the most valuable... sound bytes, headlines, instant messages, RSS feeds, e-commerce, etc. Those who do not have the capacity to participate with, consume or create it, are being left behind and are losing influence.
